Workshops and Presentations
Workshops and presentations offer an overview of the latest research findings from the fields of positive psychology and neuroscience. Strategies will be introduced for integrating evidenced based practices and new knowledge into the educational experience. Workshops are designed as interactive professional development experiences, student learning, or parent information sessions.
Workshops and presentations can be from those listed below or developed to meet the specific needs of your school:
The Power of Our Language as Teachers: This workshop delves into the impact our language can have upon our students. As educators, when we consider carefully the words we choose and the questions we ask, we can shift the educational experience. Language will be explored in the context of recent research in the field of positive psychology and specifically the areas of growth mindset and character strengths. In addition we will look at how this science supports the educational mission to teach the whole child, respect each student as a unique individual, and create the environment in which they rise to their highest potential.
“We enjoyed a powerful session with Peggy Chappell. In the days following Peggy’s presentation, faculty members and administrators continued to discuss her wisdom in the hallways, classrooms, and over meals. Many thanks to Peggy Chappell for inspiring so much conversation and thinking about the language we use and the power of a growth mindset and strengths approach.” J. Fixx, Head of School – Madison, CT
Self-Control: What is it? Why does it Matter? How does it develop?: The current literature abounds with exploration, research, and data on the impact of self-control on students’ success both in school and life. With contributions from the field of neuroscience, our understanding of the brain and the mechanism of self-control has expanded. This presentation unpacks the process of self-control and explores specific strategies for teaching students about self-control and school practices that support students as they develop this strength.
Building Resilience in our Students: An introduction to the evidenced-based tools and practices that offer a pathway to increased optimism, perseverance, and the ability to negotiate stress and challenge. Current definitions and understandings of what is meant by resilience will be reviewed. We will discuss cognitive, emotional, and physical practices for the resilient child and teen.
Embracing the Individual Strengths of Students in a Competitive World of Comparison: This presentation will dive into the wealth of research on identifying and utilizing signature character strengths as an avenue for increasing positive feelings, maximizing productivity, and furthering well-being. In fostering an appreciation and celebration of the unique gifts individual students bring to our schools, this presentation will also include a brief discussion of temperament, and personality styles.
Tools for Teachers: Caring for the Caregivers: Enjoyable and interactive, this workshop offers teachers tools for their self-care toolbox. Drawing from the fields of positive psychology and neuroscience, we will look at evidenced based techniques to elevate well-being in the very busy lives of teachers.

Consultation services provide the forum to explore your school’s needs in the area of wellness and the various pathways to meet those needs while respecting and honoring the school’s mission as well as school culture. Whether working with you on a short term basis for a few hours of exploration and recommendations or in consultation over extended time, I will bring appreciative inquiry, perspective, and resources to the process. Wellness in Schools consultation may include identifying programs and initiatives already in place that serve the well being of constituents, guiding the community in clarifying what “wellness” means for your particular school, exploring different models for wellness implemented in schools, and guiding the school in development and articulation of a wellness program and curriculum.
